Empowering Rural Women: Women Plan Rwanda Boosts Village Livelihoods
Southern Province, Rwanda — In a bid to foster economic independence among rural women, Women Plan Rwanda, a local non-governmental, non-profit organization, is making significant strides through its women’s economic empowerment initiatives.
Operating across villages in Rwanda’s Southern Province, the program trains rural women in financial literacy, savings group management, and small business development. Beneficiaries also receive startup support, including access to village savings and loan associations (VSLAs), basic entrepreneurship training, and market linkage assistance.
“Our goal is to help women move from survival to self-reliance,” said Claudine Umutoni, a program coordinator. “When women earn and control income, families thrive, and communities grow stronger.”
Dozens of women have launched successful ventures—from tailoring cooperatives to small-scale agriculture businesses. Participants report improved household incomes, food security, and increased school attendance for their children.
Women Plan Rwanda, known for its focus on empowering rural women, girls, youth, and families, continues to promote sustainable, gender-equitable development through grassroots-led solutions.
As one local woman put it: “Before, I waited on my husband for everything. Today, I run my own shop and help pay for our children’s education.”
